Gluten/Dairy Free Biscuits and Gravy

Who hasn’t had a craving for biscuits and gravy since they can’t eat gluten?  I am raising my hand EXTRA high because biscuits and gravy is one of my favorite breakfast foods and it has been sooo long since I have had this.

A friend of mine sent me a pin for biscuits and gravy and it looked so good I couldn’t pass it up so I had to try it.  Here was my inspiration for my own version.

Of course I can’t color inside the lines and while making these biscuits I saw it needed some altering.  Maybe it’s because of my humidity level and elevation (I don’t know).

Here goes:

To make life easier and not spend your life cutting in butter I used my Vitamix but you can use any good blender to do this.  Add your flour and butter and blend until your butter is super tiny and mixed well with the flour.

Next, transfer this mixture to a mixing bowl and add your baking powder, salt and sugar.

Now comes the fun part.  Add your milk 1/3 at a time and mix in with a wooden spoon until you get a nice light ever so slightly sticky dough.

Flour your surface with tapioca flour and dump out your dough and fold over on itself about 15 times or until your tired of counting.  This makes the biscuits have some layers.

Roll out your dough until it is roughly 1/4-1/2″ thick.  This is the key because otherwise if you roll your biscuits too thin you won’t be impressed.

Here I rolled it too think but didn’t realize it until I started cutting biscuits.

Your want your biscuits TWICE this thick.  Trust me!  These are the few I rolled too thin but I just left them and rolled the others thicker.

You can see the difference when you bake them.  I don’t know about you but I like the one of the left 😉  I used the flatter ones for my biscuits and gravy and saved the thicker ones for breakfast sandwiches for tomorrow.

So your going to bake these at 425 degrees for 13 minutes.  When they come out top them with some melted butter or Earth Balance.

Now it’s time for the gravy.

Brown some sausage (I used turkey sausage because I didn’t have any regular)

Turkey Burger

Move your meat to the side of your pan and add 2 tbsp corn start to the pan and 1/4c. beef broth (you don’t need this if using regular sausage) and then 3/4c. almond milk.  Salt and pepper to taste.  Whisk this all together until it thickens then move over your sausage and mix it in with the gravy in the pan.

Biscuits and Gravy

Now you are ready to make your masterpiece.

You could half these if you want but I used my thin biscuits for this and left them and they were amazing.  I am excited to try these tomorrow in a breakfast sandwich.  Oh, and these would also be amazing toasted with some butter and jam.

This recipe makes about 12 biscuits so you can freeze half of your cut out biscuits and bake them another day.

Ingredients
  • 1c. white rice flour
  • 1c. tapioca flour
  • 1c. potato starch
  • 1c. brown rice flour
  • ½c. corn starch
  • 2 tbsp. baking powder
  • ⅔c. Earth Balance Butter
  • 1 tbsp. sea salt
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 2c. almond milk.
  • Gravy:
  • 1lb. sausage
  • 2 tbsp. corn starch
  • salt and pepper
  • ¾c. milk
  • ¼c. beef broth if needed
Instructions
  1. Biscuits:
  2. Preheat oven to 425
  3. Add all the flours to a blender. Add butter slices at a time to the blender and pulse until all your butter is well combined into your flour mixture. Transfer to a mixing bowl. Add your baking powder, sea salt and sugar and mix well.
  4. Add your milk ⅓ at a time mixing well in between additions.
  5. Sprinkle tapioca flour on your surface and dump dough out on counter. Fold numerous times working dough.
  6. Roll out to ½" thick then cut your biscuits with a cutter or lid of a glass. Put on grease cookie sheet and bake for 13 minutes. Remove when golden brown
  7. Gravy:
  8. Brown gravy then in same pan move sausage over to half of pan and in the other side add your corn starch and whisk in milk until your mixture starts to thicken. Mix in your sausage and your ready to serve.

I am so excited about these doors I can’t believe it.

First, I am going to admit that my closet doors are ancient and the wood on them isn’t that great because it was so dried out and brittle.  I should have started over from using a new chunk of wood for my base but what’s done is done and they still look great.

Here are my closet doors before I started.  They weren’t necessarily ugly but they were just so boring and my house is covered in this natural wood color that has a veneer over the top and it’s just not my style.

Young Living Essential Oils for Beginners

So I have been around essential oils most of my life thanks to my mother.  I was always very skeptical when it came to oils because if you don’t get good “pure” oils you could very well be wasting your time (and money).

What am I talking about might you ask?  The majority of oils you find in health food stores and coops, etc are not pure oils.

For effective therapeutic use it is important that only pure essential oils be used.  This means natural plant essences which have been extracted by steam distillation, solvent extraction, expression, maceration or enfleurage.

Most oils will say “not safe for internal use” or “do not ingest” and those are NOT pure oils and can be harmful to you.

The majority of all essential oils can be taken internally meaning swallowed by themselves or mixed with something.  Use your reference to determine the best route of absorption based on the oil using and your ailment.

I am absolutely in LOVE with the idea of barn doors. I want to put them everywhere in my house. I live in the country in Montana and I really love the idea of incorporating such a country/rustic atmosphere in my home yet still having a very chic and modern twist on it. I wanted to share with you my ideas and inspiration and a little DIY. I am in the beginning stages of remodeling my entry way and laundry room and I am looking for inspiration for a design. I have always wanted to do something with barn doors in my house. My one drawback to all the barn door tutorials that I have been perusing is that I didn’t have enough wall space to slide my barn door for a closet or cabinet. This really made me sad. I did some further digging and realized I don’t need that extra space to slide the door to get this look.
Here are my eye sores right now that I am dealing with. My laundry room cabinets were such a horrible color of yellow that I had to do something immediately so I painted them this white and grey till I could find the time to really make them look gorgeous.

This is a tall broom closet that would actually work with a sliding rail but then I would lose some storage on the wall for hats, etc.

These are my laundry room cabinets that need a serious uplift.  I think they would be so adorable with some hobby wood framing them out and then possibly making them into a barn door theme.

I wanted to share with you my findings on some great inspiration for barn door style without having the sliding action.  It was important for me to find posts that actually are great at showing how exactly they made them and altered certain pieces so here you go.

This first post is from Remodelaholic which I love.  This post is actually an add on that stemmed from making a baby gate looking like a barn door.  Genius!

I absolutely love this idea and what I am thinking is using this design to go over my sliding broom closet door.  I wouldn’t have the top and the bottom open separately but I love the design of this barn door look.

How awesome and adorable are these cabinet doors.  I am thinking of doing this style for my laundry room cabinets.  She also gives you a great detailed tutorial on how she did these.  LOVE THEM!

In this post she has another idea for cabinet doors and these are a sliding version but I think they would be just as cute without sliding.

Here is the design I want to use for my boring entry way closet doors.  I think these are gorgeous even in the white.  There is no tutorial on how they did these but Four Generations One Roof and Remodelaholic did such a great job at giving a tutorial I think I get the gist of things.
